MANILA, Philippines – Nineteen Filipino seamen who were recently freed by Somali pirates after being held captive for 7 months are back home.
The Filipinos were crewmembers of the Greek bulk carrier MV Eleni P, which was headed to China from Ukraine when it was seized in Oman by Somali pirates last May.
Some of the victims said they were hurt by their kidnappers during their ordeal.
The overseas Filipino workers were made to undergo stress debriefing upon their return to Manila.
Despite the incident, they said they are willing to go back to their work as seafarers to support their families.
Piracy off the waters of Somalia remains the biggest threat to international shipping as armed men hold sailors and their ship hostage for ransom. – Report by Israel Malasa, ABS-CBN News; ANC
