Manama: Qatar's neighbours could host some matches during the World Cup in 2022, the head of the international governing body said.
Qatar was last week picked as the host of the quadrennial championship, making it the first Arab, Muslim and Middle Eastern country to organise the world's most popular games.
"With Qatar, football has opened up to a new world and a new culture," Fifa President Sepp Blatter said as he defended the designation of Qatar as hosts in 2022.
"The Arab world that has tried several times to host the World Cup, through Morocco and Egypt for example, can legitimately claim the right to stage the games. We must not forget that Islam has one billion people," Blatter told French sports daily L'Equipe.
The newspaper on Thursday said that Blatter did not exclude the possibility that matches can be held in countries near Qatar.
