Jackson has triple-double, Bobcats beat Suns
CHARLOTTE, N.C.(AP) Before the Charlotte Bobcats scattered for the offseason last spring, Stephen Jackson walked into his exit interview and heard coach Larry Brown issue a challenge.
"He told me I was one of the guys in the league that could either come close or flirt with a triple-double every night," Jackson said. "That says a lot from a Hall of Fame coach like Larry Brown to believe that you can do that."
Jackson did his coach proud on Saturday night with 24 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists for the first triple-double in franchise history in the Bobcats' 123-105 victory over a listless Phoenix Suns team playing without Steve Nash.
Howard, Nelson lead Magic over Pacers
INDIANAPOLIS(AP) Dwight Howard and the Orlando Magic turned up the intensity just in time.
Jameer Nelson converted a go-ahead three-point play with 33 seconds left, leading Howard and the Magic to a 90-86 victory over the Indiana Pacers on Saturday night.
"It was huge," Magic coach Stan Van Gundy said. "We made our free throws down the stretch. It was a very difficult win and a very tough loss for them because I thought both teams played very, very hard and fought very, very hard."
Howard scored 19 of his 25 points in the second half, helping Orlando recover from a 52-49 halftime deficit. Rashard Lewis made five 3-pointers and finished with 21 points.
Howard had three fouls by halftime but made an adjustment during the break to help him stay on the floor.
"I think the first half, my foul trouble was stupid," he said. "Reaching instead of going for blocks, just throwing people out of the way. That's stuff that I shouldn't be doing and I think in the second half, I tried to beat them down the court and force them to foul me."
Nowitzki, Terry lead Dallas past Hawks
ATLANTA(AP) Dirk Nowitzki knows the Dallas Mavericks still need to improve their rebounding.
One night after an embarrassing effort against Chicago, however, the Mavericks grabbed more boards than an Atlanta team that's routinely inconsistent on the glass.
"That was terrible yesterday, totally frustrating," Nowitzki said. "It was just a bad night. Everybody needed to respond after a game like that yesterday."
Nowitzki scored 21 points, Jason Terry added 15 and Dallas snapped a two-game skid with a 98-93 victory over the Hawks on Saturday night.
Hawks guard Joe Johnson couldn't shake Tyson Chandler's tight defense and misfired on a 3-point attempt that would've forced a tie with 2.5 seconds remaining.
Nowitzki followed with a pair of free throws to seal the victory for Dallas, which has won four of five on the road and outrebounded the Hawks 40-37.
