MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Patriots have tapped a veteran of World Championships to replace injured import Anthony Johnson as they rev up their bid for a back-to-back championship in the AirAsia ASEAN Basketball League (ABL).
Rasheim Wright, a naturalized Jordanian citizen who led his country to a fifth place finish in the World Championships in 2007, will now shoulder the scoring chores for the PHL cagers.
Wright, however, will be arriving next week just in time for their second meeting with the Singapore Slingers.
That left the PHL Patriots with only one import in Donald Little when they clash for the third time with the Brunei Barracudas on Saturday in Brunei.
The PHL cagers left for their road game in Bandar Seri Begawan on Thursday with hopes that they could duplicate or even better their 72-67 overtime win over the hosts in a game where they also missed Johnson.
Expected to give the Patriots firepower are many-time national team members Egay "The Big Time" Billones and Junjun Cabatu.
Born in Philadelphia Pennsylvania, the 6-foot-3 Wright is expected to provide championship experience, having played to a number of international basketball tournaments, suiting up for different countries such as Mexico, Argentina, Turkey and Asian powers Lebanon, Iran and Jordan.
