Filipino babysitter, Leticia Moratal, claims that her Filipino employers, Elsa and Augusto Nolasco, together with their daughters, subjected her to “backbreaking labor and mental abuse” for 10 years.
She is suing the Nolasco family for forced labor, slavery, human trafficking, among other charges.
Moratal came to New York in 2001 to work as a babysitter for Elsa with a promise of an $800 a month salary and a day off every week, but she claims she was never paid a single cent.
Moratal said the Nolascos confiscated her passport, isolated her from Filipino visitors, and renamed her “Baba, our slave”.
Moratal, who remains undocumented, claims her employers threatened her with deportation.
In a separate filing, in Floral Park, New York, is another human trafficking lawsuit.
Filipina accountant Jacqueline Aguirre filed a lawsuit in federal court in December against Best Care Agency and its owners, Dorothy de Castro and Perlita Jordan, for subjecting her to human trafficking.
She claims they made a false promise of sponsoring her green card and making her work more hours with less pay.
Aguirre says they intimidated her with threats of deportation to keep her silent about the abuses. Aguirre came to the US on a Visitor’s Visa.
It turned out that Best Care Agency was not eligible to sponsor her because it could only pay Aguirre $8 an hour. Aguirre is now jobless and may get deported. Balitang America
