Missing sailboat with Americans spotted off Dinagat Island

A sailboat that has been missing since last week has been spotted off the coast of Dinagat Island in southern Philippines, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) reported Sunday.

The missing sailboat, named “The Pineapple," was spotted on Saturday at the north northwest portion of Dinagat Island, near Kanhandon Point in Hibuson Island along Surigao Strait, PCG spokesperson Commander Armand Balilo said in a text message.

The sea vessel, which reportedly carries five American passengers, left Guam last Jan. 6 and was reported missing after it failed to reach its destination, Cebu, on Jan. 18.

The PCG, together with the United States Coast Guard and the Guam News Network, launched a search-and-rescue operation on the missing sailboat last week, immediately after family members of its passengers reported the sea vessel to be missing.

Balilo said the authorities have already established contact with the sailboat’s passengers. He expects to bring the vessel to shore before Sunday night. - Andreo Calonzo/KBK, GMANews.TV
