DOJ panel: Methane gas caused Glorietta 2 blast

A Department of Justice (DOJ) special fact-finding panel has ruled out bomb as the cause of the Glorietta 2 blast in October 2007.

On Thursday, panel head Senior State Prosecutor Peter Ong announced that contrary to the claims of retired Army Col. Allan Sollano, the explosion was caused by methane gas, as police had earlier ruled.

"Based on our investigation, it is clear that the Glorietta [incident] was not a terrorist attack. There was an explosion but it was not caused by a bomb," said Ong.

The briefing is ongoing as of posting time.

Sollano had claimed the explosion at the Glorietta 2 mall in Makati City last Oct. 19, 2007 was caused by a bomb, alleging that a previous police investigation was whitewashed to cover up for the administration of then President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

Sollano faced the DOJ inquiry last Nov. 18, 2010 and stood by his earlier claims. His former superior, incumbent Armed Forces of the Philippines chief Gen. Ricardo David, however, denied there was a cover-up in the police probe. — Sophia Dedace/LBG, GMANews.TV
