Report: Central Visayas cops, military on alert vs Abu Sayyaf attacks

The police and military forces in Central Visayas have heightened their alert after receiving intelligence reports that the Abu Sayyaf is planning possible attacks in the region.

The news site Visayan Daily Star reported on Tuesday that police and military tightened security in Negros Oriental, as well as tourist destinations in Siquijor and Bohol.

“We are in control. But all of us must be vigilant and report the arrival of suspicious persons as well as dubious seacrafts especially along the shores of the province," Negros Oriental provincial police director, Senior Supt. Rey Lyndon Lawas was quoted in the report.

Lawas said they received intelligence reports that some suspected Abu Sayyaf members left Zamboanga and headed to Dumaguete as early as January 3.

The report cited an "unverified" military intelligence report that suspected Abu Sayyaf members were headed towards Negros Oriental, and that it may be targeting Bohol.

However, Lawas said these are unverified information and it is possible that the suspected terrorists may be passing through Dumaguete to another destination.

Still, he said he had directed police chiefs in the southern towns where most beach resorts are located, along with Bais City in central Negros Oriental, to coordinate with their management and undertake necessary security measures.

Lawas also reassured the public there is no cause for concern.

At least three Philippine Navy boats were deployed at the popular tourist destinations — Balicasag Island and Panglao Island, specifically Alona Beach — to thwart possible attacks by the Abu Sayyaf, which had been linked to kidnap-for-ransom cases.

Meanwhile, the Philippine National Police (PNP) is also coordinating with the Bantay Dagat, the barangay intelligence networks especially along the coastal areas. Volunteers act as lookouts for unusual activities in their areas.

Lawas said the police is also tapping the assistance of the local Muslim community whose members have been very helpful against terrorism. – VVP, GMANews.TV
